2012 Buick Enclave CXL AWD Review

2012 Buick Enclave CXL AWD Review
This is a tough crowd. The crossover segment as a whole is not only in constant expansion but it is evolving at a practically alarming rate. What were once crude station wagons, SUVs and other types of dedicated people and cargo movers, save for minivans, are now all found under the crossover moniker.

Minivans have all but been replaced by CUVs over the last half-decade. General Motors was one of the manufacturers that put an axe into “magic wagons” in exchange for the far more modern SUV-cum-wagon. This move actually allowed the General to rekindle a plan they had put forth with the old Uplander/Montana/Terraza/Relay quartet of minivans. The Buick Terraza was to be the luxury van but it never caught on as did the Chrysler Town & Country. Needless to say, it – and mediocre sales, or none at all if they didn't give the vans away with a new set of tires – got canned.

The 2012 Buick Enclave is the high-end nameplate of one of GM's last badge-engineered group of vehicles. Unlike the final days of the minivans, the GMC Acadia, Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave are actually quite successful. The 2011 calendar year will have put roughly 175,000 of them on the road in the US and about 13,500 in Canada.

It's easy to understand why families are well into these vehicles. In base form, they're affordable and incredibly spacious. At the other end of the pricing spectrum, the Buick builds on versatility and packs in tonnes of luxury features.

My tested Enclave CXL included the long list of necessary must-haves to make any cabin luxurious. As you look through the gallery, you'll note wood trim, cowhide, some fancy lightning, a little chrome and lots of buttons. Despite my Buick's near $59,000 price tag, it did not have navigation but I survived. I did have Bluetooth connectivity, satellite radio, backup camera, power everything and a ginormous optional SkyScape sunroof.

The vehicle's seats, especially in the first two rows, are genuinely comfortable. The rear-most bench is acceptable for even adults as legroom is aplenty. With said row stowed, the Enclave (like its brethren) really shines. My parents, snowbirds, were both impressed with the impressively large trunk, more than capable of bringing nearly every item of clothing they own, beach chairs, golf bag and pull carts, with room to spare for our gifts on the return trip.

Honda (Acura)
Oh la la. Talk about a sinking ship. This Japanese automaker had the industry copying its every move 15 years ago when the entire Honda and Acura lineups made non-owners green with envy. The Civic Si, the Acura Integra... now that was some car!

Today, the Civics and Accords are still good sellers, but more out of habit than pure desire like in the past. They've lost so much soul and substance that we can almost see through them. Their watered-down looks, virtual disappearance of driving excitement and dwindling sales show that Honda has derailed. Even Honda knows it.

Here's an idea: Hire a German designer who will give the brand its lustre back, much like Kia did. Consumers still like Honda and we're convinced that they will embrace the return of true Honda cars. It shouldn't take a couple more years.

Nissan (Infiniti)

Here's another automaker that has lost its way. Nissan made a wrong turn about six years ago after seemingly emptying its resources with the 2002 Altima and 2003 Murano. Of course, we're talking about mainstream models : Both the Z and GT-R are untouchable and, any way you look at it, they don't have much of an impact on the company's financial health.

Somewhere, somehow, one or a few teams at Nissan manage to develop fascinating creatures. Unfortunately, these products don't target mass production and diffusion. The ideas behind the Juke, cube, and even the LEAF are excellent if not innovative. Nissan should definitely use these brains more often.

One thing's for sure: It simply can't continue to serve vehicles such as the Quest, Versa sedan (the hatchback was pretty good), Sentra, and Maxima. Sales figures don't lie and the tsunami excuse no longer works. Nissan has to climb out of the ditch and perhaps draw more inspiration from its French partner in order to regain some kind of momentum.

On certain vehicles, a weld at the boost sensor bracket may fail, allowing the bracket to separate from the air inlet tube. If this occurred, the engine would enter fail-safe driving mode, resulting in reduced motive power in which the vehicle could still be driven for short distances. Continued operation could cause the engine to stall which, in conjunction with traffic and road conditions, and the driver's reactions, could increase the risk of a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the air inlet tube assembly

On certain vehicles, the zinc coating applied to the positive battery terminal stud bolt (during the manufacturing process) may be thicker than desired. This could result in a voltage drop that may cause difficulty starting the engine. This can also damage the Engine Control Module (ECM), which could cause the engine to stall. Engine stalling would result in lost vehicle propulsion which, in conjunction with traffic and road conditions, and the driver’s reactions, could increase the risk of a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the positive battery terminal

On certain vehicles, the engine oil cooler stud (onto which the oil filter is mounted) could fail. This could cause an engine oil leak, which could illuminate the instrument panel's engine oil warning lamp. Abnormal noise and rough engine performance may also be noticed and, in the worst case, the engine could fail and stop suddenly while the vehicle is in motion. Engine failure would result in lost vehicle propulsion which, in conjunction with traffic and road conditions, and the driver's reactions, could increase the risk of a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the engine oil cooler connector stud

Infiniti getting charged up over new sports car concept

A highly advanced, range-extending electric sports car concept is under development at Infiniti. Set to emerge at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2012, this vehicle is being created to extend the potential for high-performance, low-emission electric cars.

Explaining the strategy behind the concept, Andy Palmer, Executive Vice President, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd and Infiniti said: "At the Geneva Show next year, we will present our vision for a totally new kind of inspired premium performance car. Infiniti already has hybrid and clean diesel models on sale. And with an all-electric sedan on the way, the natural next step was to push the boundaries where performance and the environment intersect

As a 16-year-old kid growing up in the UK, I just loved the red & white Torino with the jacked-up rear end which Paul Michael Glaser drove in the hit 70’s TV show Starsky & Hutch, but apparently he didn’t view the vehicle with quite the same admiration. In fact, the show’s creator originally chose one of his personal favourites, the Chevy Camaro Convertible, but was overruled by production due to the tie-in they enjoyed at the time with the Ford Motor Company.

Glaser took an immediate and long-lasting dislike to the vehicle (He found the idea of two 'undercover' cops driving around in such an outlandish car ludicrous), and yet the car affectionately known as the “Striped Tomato”, went on to become one of the most iconic television cars of all time. In fact, it’s probably the most copied TV car out there today. Go to any classic car show where Ford Torinos hang out and you’re bound to run into one or two re-creations.

For the pilot episode, two 1975 Ford Gran Torinos were used, both 2-doors powered by a 351 Windsor V8. Glaser did his best to wreck as many as he could during the course of the series, often slamming them up against sidewalks at high speed. Fortunately, the Torino remained unchanged from 1974 ‘till 1976, allowing production to replace these quite readily.

It’s hard to say whether the Striped Tomato’s jacked-up rear end and wider rear rubber started the whole craze rolling, but one of my first vehicles ended up looking quite similar. Of course, my Ford Escort Mk1 ex-builder’s delivery van didn’t boost my image as much as the Gran Torino did for the famous crime-fighting duo!

The Stripped Tomato made a brief return in the 2004 feature film starring Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, with Snoop Dogg playing the much-loved Huggy Bear. Although hilariously funny in parts, the famous red & white Torino played a much lesser role. For me, that was the great downside of the movie. After all, for someone who learned most of his driving skills from watching Starsky at the wheel, the red & white bad-guy catcher was always the true star of the show!
